Particular Redemption

Limited Atonement

The Atonement of Jesus Christ is not limited in its power to save, but in the extent to which it reaches and will save certain individuals.

Limited atonement is a theological term that has been used for centuries to define a very important aspect of the Gospel.  It is a fundamental Christian doctrine which states that Jesus Christ came and died for a limited number of people.  He did not die, or redeem, every individual for all of time, but for some individuals, i.e. His sheep and His church.  This does not mean that the power of His death could not have saved all men if He wanted to.  The power and efficacy of His death in and through one drop of His blood could have saved a million-billion worlds.  That was not what God intended.  The Scripture does not dabble in “possibilities.”  It does, however, state that the scope of His death is limited

Jesus Christ, much like the lamb of the Old Testament sacrifice, died for some people, and secured the salvation of those people through His death which took away their sin and imputed (or accounted) His own righteousness to them.  This is something Christ accomplished on the cross; not something individuals initiate.  It is true, as the Scriptures state, that he died for “all men” and that God loves “the whole world”.  In these cases “all men” does not mean  every individual inclusively for all time including Judas and Pharaoh.  Nor does it necessarily follow that Christ died for the whole world because God loves the whole world inclusively.  (For a study of these passages see “the all and world passages” in Owen’s Death of Death or in Calvin’s the “all” passages.)  Jesus secured the salvation of those for whom He gave his life, and for those God imputes His righteousness upon them.  Jesus does not infallibly secure the salvation of all men, for thence, all men would be saved.

As the Maxim goes:

God imposed his wrath due unto, and Christ underwent the pains of hell for either:

1) All of the sins of all men – which means all men are saved.

2) Some of the sins of all men – which means men are still in their sins.

3) All of the sin of some men – which is the biblical position.

Those who hold to a deviant “gospel” must grapple with the fact that Jesus does His saving on the cross.  All those for whom he died will be saved in time and justified by GOD.

It is not that Christ’s power is “limited” but rather His intent or use OF THAT POWER is limited to those for whom He died, and chose.

The “limitation” of the extent is a deciding factor in the Gospel message as to whether one believes that the God of the GOSPEL SAVES, or that men save themselves because Jesus did not save anyone directly, but made it hypothetically possible that they could reach out and save themselves.  Hypothetical salvation is no salvation at all.

Jesus died and secured the salvation of all those that the Father gave Him, and that cannot be snatched out of the Father’s hands.  It is not that Christ “might save, but that He IS the Savior. He does not lay His life down for all, but for His sheep.  He does not give His life for Judas, but only for His friends. It is the church, not the world, which Christ has purchased with His own blood.

John 6:37-40, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.   For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.  And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Matthew 1:21, “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

John 10:15, “As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Acts 20:28, “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”

Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”

Puritan Quotations on Limited Atonement:

“Election is ascribed to God the Father, sanctification to the Spirit and reconciliation to Jesus Christ.  This is the chain of salvation and never a link of this chain must be broken.  The Son cannot die for them the Father never elected, and the Spirit will never sanctify them whom the Father has not elected nor the Son redeemed.”  - Thomas Manton

“Application is the making effectual, in certain men, all those things which Christ has done and does as mediator.” - William Ames

“As for the intention of application, it is rightly said that Christ made satisfaction only for those whom he saved.” - William Ames

“[If Jesus died for all men]…why then, are not all freed from the punishment of all their sins?  You will say, “Because of their unbelief; they will not believe.”  But his unbelief, is it sin, or not?  If not, why should they be punished for it?  If it be sin, then Christ underwent the punishment due to it; If this is so, then why must that hinder them more than their other sins for which he died from partaking of the fruit of his death?  If he did not, then he did not die for all their sins.”  - John Owen

“We are often told that we limit the atonement of Christ, because we say that Christ has not made satisfaction for all men, or all men would be saved.  Now, our reply to this is, that, on the other hand, our opponents limit it: we do not.  The Arminians say, Christ died for all men. Ask them what they mean by it.  Did Christ die so as to secure the salvation of all men.   They say, “No, certainly not.”  We ask them the next question–Did Christ die so as to secure the salvation of any man in particular?  They answer, “No.”  They are obliged to admit this, if they are consistent.  They say, “No, Christ has died that any man may be saved if…” –and then follow certain conditions of salvation.  Now, who is it that limits the death of Christ? Why, you.  You say that Christ did not die so as to secure the salvation of anybody.   We beg your pardon, when you say that we limits Christ’s death; we say, “no my dear sir, it is you that do it.”  We say Christ so died that he infallibly secured the salvation of a multitude that no man can number, who through Christ’s death not only may be saved, but are saved, must be saved and cannot by any possibility run the hazard of being anything but saved.  You are welcome to your atonement; you may keep it.  We will never renounce ours for the sake of it.” - Charles Spurgeon

Sermon of the week: “Dating” by Paul Washer.

Sermon of the week: “Dating” by Paul Washer.: "

Your sermon of the week is–without a doubt–going to step on some toes, but it is one that needs to be heard. Paul washer pulls no punches in his message simply entitled: Dating.

I found myself saying out loud, “Amen, Paul Washer, Amen” when he compared a teenage boy’s desire to date his daughter without his consent like that of the theft of his truck. (You have to hear it in its context to truly appreciate it.)

This message is a combination of three shorter talks he gave on the subject of recreational dating (for a total run time of around 90 minutes) and it is a must-hear for those whose kids are dating or about to engage in dating.

If you’re not sure whether this sermon is worth your while, just listen to the first ten seconds. It’s not a message everyone will want to hear, but then again, DefCon’s not known for posting sermons that tickle the ear.

If you want to hear more on the subject of dating, see Pastor Tim Conway’s message The Ungodly Practice of Dating found on this previous post.

To the Honor Academy August Class of 2010

August Class of 2010:

It has been a week since you graduated from the Honor Academy. This may have been the least eventful week you have had in a long time. Home is not the same as it once was. Searching for jobs, enrolling in school, trying to find your place in the world you left never to return the same. I had the privilege of watching each one of you graduate, and also to hear Mr. Luce implore you to strive after honor. This is a noble goal, but I would like to encourage you to strive for something slightly different. Obtaining honor is not the chief goal of man, striving to glorify God is.
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

So what is glorifying to God? Well that I believe is simple “Love the LORD your God” (Deut. 6:5). John tells us how to love God.
“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” 2 John 1:6 NIV

Obedience! At its root the thing that glorifies God is obedience to his commands. His chief command was to love, and the way to love God is through obedience. Mr. Luce talked about the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel. The words these men replied to king Nebuchadnezzar were not words seeking honor but rather were words striving to glorify God. Nebuchadnezzar asked “who is the God who will deliver you out of my hands?” and these three men replied:
"O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O kin. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." Daniel 3:16b-18

Our God whom we serve, the one we obey, that is who will deliver us. These men did not seek their own honor but the glorification of God.

What about David? This man had his faults. Yes. But he spared Saul’s life twice (1 Samuel 24, 1 Samuel 26) because he desired to obey God. Also, when Nathan confronted David he repented (2 Samuel 12) and recognized that he did not disobey any man but rather he disobeyed God. David a man after God’s own heart glorified God. David did not seek honor, but he got it.

Mr. Luce has it right, to desire the acclaim of honor is good, but do not do it by your own bidding. Therefore, I implore you, seek first the kingdom, seek first to give glory to God, preach the Gospel, love him, obey his commands, and honor will surely fall upon you. Not an honor you can wear as a badge but an eternal one that will stand in the sight of God.
“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” Romans 11:36 ESV

Philemon 1:3,
Ryan Mark

Mike Bickle and the Kansas City Cult Called IHOP

Mike Bickle and the Kansas City Cult Called IHOP: "

What is one warning sign of a cult? Well, I think the most obvious is when a person is kept away from their loved-ones and all forms of communication are severed. That’s the most familiar one we all know about.

I want to call your attention to a blog called Sadparent’s Weblog. This lady is suffering through a very hurtful event in her life. Apparently, her son attends Mike Bickle’s International House of Prayer (IHOP), and as a result, he has been advised to break communication with his mother for at least a year. This is what Sadparent says:

I’ve lost a son to a thing called IHOP – he told me that “older and wiser council” had met with him. It was, therefore, his decision (after meeting with this ‘older and wiser council’) that he and I should have ZERO communication for “one year..at least”.

That’s the beginning of a great novel in the making. It’s also the sad, sad truth behind the last 2 years and 3 months of my life. The International House of “Prayer” (and unaccredited university) has been the catalyst in tearing a once loving relationship between mother and son in half. But that’s not what’s caused me to go into such deep mourning. (Online Source)

All the markers are there. The warning signs are beaming in all their brilliant resilience… and so many still can’t see them. This goes to show you truly can’t see when you’re blind.

Would Mike Bickle be ready to admit that his “church” is a cult? Highly doubtful! I can’t read his mind, but his behavior of days past has shown me that Bickle isn’t always as blind to his behavior as some might think. Bickle’s whole church has been built on the prophecies of Bob Jones and Paul Cain, both of which have been discredited as false and dangerous. (For more on Cain and Jones, please click here.) Bickle’s behavior has a mafia-like feel to it, and may have gone unchecked were it not for a report written by Pastor Ernie Gruen. Now, I want to give out a disclaimer by saying that I do not agree with all of Pastor Gruen’s views on doctrine, nor do I endorse the man himself, however, his personal report is shocking and needs to be read by anyone and everyone who is considering attending IHOP. Therefore, I am posting it based solely upon the merit of the documented abuses, excesses, and false doctrines it contains. You can access that by clicking here. As I just stated, this report relays eye-witness and first-hand accounts of abuses from Mike Bickle and leadership such as Bickle and his church strongarming other churches so his church can dissolve them, false prophecies and the damage it has caused, and many other things. It’s quite a compelling read. Quite the eye opener if your eyes aren’t opened already. This report will tell you all you need to know about Mike Bickle, Paul Cain, Bob Jones, and all things that eventually led to the birthing of IHOP.

After the document written by Gruen was released, it was so damaging that Bickle and crew circulated the lie that Gruen had issued a city-wide apology which said he was not only deceived, but was a deceiver himself. That shows the fruits of Bickle and company. Gruen had moral failings and never denied such as far as I know, but he vehemently denied that he had ever retracted his report and stood by it until his death. In fact, the report had so much verifiable documentation, it was hard for Bickle to wiggle out of it. What else could they do but discredit the messenger?

For further information about Pastor Ernie Gruen, please click here and read a post called, “The Vindication of E. Gruen.” This is just a small snippet:

So it has been confirmed by the original source that the Infamous Ernie Gruen Report was never apologized for. And that whoever is keeping up Mike Bickle’s wikipedia page is either lying, or was lied to. There is no city-wide letter that Ernie Gruen wrote apologizing for the letter. None has ever turned up to substantiate the claim.

I.H.O.P is guilty until proven innocent.

To SadParent I want to say, please hang in there. Our thoughts are with you.

New-Calvinism: A Return To Biblical Christianity

Calvinism has been around for 500 years. Calvin spoke biblically on points of salvation. With the rise of New-Calvinism across America, this resurgence is a return to Biblical evangelism. Although New-Calvinism could become dangerous if undirected, it is the best hope in turning from the seeker-sensitive, watered down Gospel church culture of America.

Calvinism is the theological system of Calvin and his followers marked by strong emphasis on the sovereignty of God, the depravity of humankind, and the doctrine of predestination (“calvinism”). Calvin taught on five main points of salvation: Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints, or TULIP.
“T.U.L.I.P. concerns the essential doctrines which pertain to the salvation of God's chosen people through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. The Puritans were keenly aware that if the essentials of the Christian faith were overthrown or changed, the faith disappeared. It would no longer be the faith of the Bible. It would not longer be the doctrines of the Bible. It would no longer be Christianity. Rather, it would be the vanity of someone's unbiblical and unexegetical mind, heresy which would infiltrate and hurt the people of God.”(McMahon)

Total Depravity is the idea that without Christ mans only choice is sin (McMahon).
10AS IT IS WRITTEN: "NONE IS RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE;11NO ONE UNDERSTANDS; NO ONE SEEKS FOR GOD.12ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE; TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME WORTHLESS; NO ONE DOES GOOD, NOT EVEN ONE."(ENGLISH STANDARD VERSION ROMANS 3:10-12)

Unconditional Election claims that God chooses based on his sovereign will whom he will save (McMahon).
64BUT THERE ARE SOME OF YOU WHO DO NOT BELIEVE." (FOR JESUS KNEW FROM THE BEGINNING WHO THOSE WERE WHO DID NOT BELIEVE, AND WHO IT WAS WHO WOULD BETRAY HIM.) 65AND HE SAID, "THIS IS WHY I TOLD YOU THAT NO ONE CAN COME TO ME UNLESS IT IS GRANTED HIM BY THE FATHER."( JOHN 6:64-65)

Limited Atonement is the idea that “The Atonement of Jesus Christ is not limited in its power to save, but in the extent to which it reaches and will save certain individuals” (McMahon).
21SHE WILL BEAR A SON, AND YOU SHALL CALL HIS NAME JESUS, FOR HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS."(MATTHEW 1:21)

“Since grace is undeserved by any person, Irresistible Grace teaches that when the Spirit of God is sent to change a person's heart, that person cannot resist the change” (McMahon).
37ALL THAT THE FATHER GIVES ME WILL COME TO ME, AND WHOEVER COMES TO ME I WILL NEVER CAST OUT.( JOHN 6:37)

Perseverance of the saints teaches that once God has renewed the heart of a sinner through the application of the redemption wrought by Christ upon the cross, he will continue to be saved and show forth the fruits of that salvation (McMahon).
6AND I AM SURE OF THIS, THAT HE WHO BEGAN A GOOD WORK IN YOU WILL BRING IT TO COMPLETION AT THE DAY OF JESUS CHRIST.( PHILIPPIANS 1:6)

Though these five points are what Calvin is best known for, he preached on average 5 times per week (Piper).
“Of course, like every other man besides Jesus Christ, John Calvin was imperfect. His renown is not owing to infallibility, but to his relentless allegiance to the Scriptures as the Word of God in a day when the Bible had been almost swallowed up by church tradition.”(Piper)

Calvin was a God-fearing man whose deepest desire was to honor God and speak his truth.

New-Calvinism doesn’t discount anything Calvin taught or anything traditionally believed by Calvinists, it simply continues what Calvin taught. “New Calvinists defy mainstream evangelicalism because they believe it’s gone soft on sin and watered down the Gospel into a glorified self-help program. In part, Calvinism appeals because it’s insensitive to seekers.”(Farnworth) There is a desire in our generation for biblical truth and we will not stand for a watered down version of truth no matter how hard it is to hear.
"They have plenty of friends: what they need is a God." Mohler says, "The moment someone begins to define God's [being or actions] biblically, that person is drawn to conclusions that are traditionally classified as Calvinist."(Van Biema)

Calvinism is back, and not just musically. John Calvin's 16th century reply to medieval Catholicism's buy-your-way-out-of-purgatory excesses is Evangelicalism's latest success story, complete with an utterly sovereign and micromanaging deity, sinful and puny humanity, and the combination's logical consequence, predestination: the belief that before time's dawn, God decided whom he would save (or not), unaffected by any subsequent human action or decision. Calvinism, cousin to the Reformation's other pillar, Lutheranism, is a bit less dour than its critics claim: it offers a rock-steady deity who orchestrates absolutely everything, including illness (or home foreclosure!), by a logic we may not understand but don't have to second-guess. Our satisfaction — and our purpose — is fulfilled simply by "glorifying" him (Van Biema).

So why is there concern with New-Calvinism? The concern simply is that where there is knowledge, pride and arrogance also follow.
“Of course, that presumption of inevitability has drawn accusations of arrogance and divisiveness since Calvin's time. Indeed, some of today's enthusiasts imply that non-Calvinists may actually not be Christians. Skirmishes among the Southern Baptists (who have a competing non-Calvinist camp) and online "flame wars" bode badly.” (Van Biema).

New-Calvinism is one of the most divisive topics the church has seen in recent times.
“I believe that [Calvinism] is potentially the most explosive and divisive issue facing us in the near future. It has already been an issue that has split literally dozens of churches, and it holds the potential to split the entire convention [Southern Baptist Convention].” -Steve Lemke (Farnworth)

In order for New-Calvinism to be as impactful as the Calvinism of the reformation, New-Calvinists need to sprinkle their message with grace. New-Calvinists need to heed the words of Martin Luther “I opposed indulgences and all, papists, but never by force. I simply taught, preached, wrote God’s Word: otherwise I did nothing…. I left it to the Word.” (Farnworth) They will need to leave it to the word of God. New-Calvinism is on the rise; the appealing truth-above-comfort mentality and the commitment to hold true to scripture is going to change things in the evangelical world. This church culture that looks similar to the catholic church of 500 years ago is in for an awaking of intelligent, well spoken, biblically sound, and thought provoking young adult generation that is going to be leading the churches of tomorrow.
